I liked how the temple is not commercial at all, and feels like a very local experience. The rooms are big and comfortable. As a solo female traveller I overall felt safe. The meals (dinner and breakfast) are typical Japanese vegetarian courses, served in very beautiful rooms. The service in the early morning was very interesting and insightful. I appreciated that there were both Japanese visitors and foreign visitors and the monks gave us an explanation in English.

And I would rate this hotel a 100 out of 10 if I can, the high rating is truly deserved. The staff is very kind and welcoming. The rooms are clean, spacious, and the futon is comfortable. The location is great, there are many food places nearby, the beach is just a few minutes walk away (you can even see it from your room depending on where you are placed), and the bus stop which will take you to the station or most places around Shirahama is very near.

Situé dans la région sacrée de Koyasan, le 高野山 宿坊 西禅院 -Koyasan Shukubo Saizenin- propose un hébergement sobre entouré de montagnes et de nombreux temples. Koyasan is a beautiful area and well worth staying a night. Saizenin is stunningly appointed and the morning prayer was a very spiritual experience. It's right opposite an amazing temple complex which is so busy during the day but you have it to yourself in the evening when the day trippers have left. The monk cadet school is just up the road and being woken at five in the morning with their beautiful mass chanting was also a totally unique experience. The textures of the traditional vegan Shojin Ryori food are difficult for Western tastes, even for those accustomed to Japanese cuisine. But I admire that they have strictly upheld their traditions and have refused to adapt to the potential demands of their foreign visitors. It's an experience.
