Our stay at Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso was one of our highlights of our honeymoon! The hotel is insanely charming and very well kept. You can see it's an old building but it doesn't look old or worn down. The staff are friendly and polite, and greet you by the door when you arrive and leave the hotel. They were also very accomodating to us when we asked to keep out futons out, as we wanted to take a nap during the day. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and a lovely experience, it was delicious and presented nicely and staff was attentive and friendly. Our suite was amazing, and we loved having our own private bath outside on a balcony overlooking a snowy hill.

Itoya could be Zao Onsen's unofficial museum, brimming with bric-a-brac and skiing memorablia. Spacious rooms with mountain views and plenty of hot water for tea. Traditional Japanese breakfast at 7.30am with jazz (definitely book the breakfast option, you won't find any better in town). A shrine of sorts to the Beatles (!). Excellent little onsen – I always had the women's one to myself, such a treat. Sweet elderly couple doing a heroic job running the place on their own. WIFI was strong. Drying room for ski gear. Many thoughtful touches, including your own kimono. Be sure to buy your ski pass from them as you get a good discount. < 10 mins walk to several ski lifts. I can't wait to go back.

Breakfast was traditional and nice. The staff were incredibly helpful and drove us to the places we needed to get to. Room was clean and simple but everything you need.

Wonderful location in Zao Onsen, and we were able to use the Ryokan's shuttle from Yamagata station - It's also only a 5-10 minute walk from Zao Onsen's bus terminal for trips back down to Yamagata or if the shuttle times don't suit/are full. Also only a 5-10 minute walk to the Onsen's convenience store, as well as the gondola lifts up to various peaks around. It was unseasonably warm leading up to our visit and the wintersports season hadn't quite started yet, but there was snow on the shaded side of the valley. Food was fantastic, the kaiseki was stunning for all our meals and we were really able to sample a wide range of local dishes and ingredients and they tasted great. There is a nice selection of local Sake and Sochu/etc as well. The baths are lovely (as we stayed during winter, the outdoor baths were closed) and are cycled between genders after cleaning so you can experience both baths during a multi-night stay. They're quite cosy, with room for maybe only 5-10 people at most, but given the overall size of the Ryokan and other guests' schedules it was empty most times we went for a bath, and only with one or two other people the times it wasn't. The onsen water is as advertised, heavy on the sulfur, though the smell did not bother me (I did have a bit of a stuffy nose), and very therapeutic. We stayed in a Japanese-style room which was lovely, clean, stocked with amenities etc as one would expect. Staff were wonderful, struggled a little bit with very sparing English, but we managed to get by with our sparing Japanese as well.

The outdoor Onsen was awesome and it’s beautiful. The dinner was really great and the staff were friendly. The view of the room is epic.

Great location, 5 minutes walking from the ski resort, 1 minute from public onsen, 2 minutes walking from the bus stop. A lot of restaurants around. The stuff are friendly. The breakfast is really good, Japanese style.
