Beautiful establishment. The staff were very kind. We arrived late to the hotel but they made sure we were on time for the theater performance down the road. Every detail about the hotel was perfect, from the moment you arrived to the departure. They did not offer a Western style breakfast, which was the only downside of our experience there. It has a very local vibe to it.

Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto...
Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto Airport and is easy to reach in a rental car. The scenery en route is amazing! The Gorge is stunning but not very long. The rowing boat trip is relatively expensive, ¥5100 for 30 minutes for a max of 3 people, but it is great fun with wonderful photo opportunities! You can walk some of the way along the river but part of the path is still damaged. There are several nice shrines in the area, one of which does nightly Kagura dance performances (1 hour for ¥1000). We stayed 2 nights in a lovely Ryokan at the end of our holiday and it was a great way to finiour trip to Japan.

A hiker's dream. Lots of trails, stairs, nature, waterfalls. The rice terraces' views are amazing. Farm animals. My kids and I loved it all. The boating on the Gorge was a great fun experience!

Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place!
Takachiho is an absolutely beautiful place! The gorge was one of the most incredible places I have ever been in my life and I will definitely be returning one day with my family. I cannot recommend this place enough.
The locals were so friendly! Literally everyone I spoke to was so kind and helpful, when I panicked and got myself lost they were so wonderful. Even kids walking home from school said hi as they passed me!
The only catch is that if you’re flying into Kumamoto Airport, there is only one bus that will take you to Takachiho and it’s over two hours to travel and only comes twice a day. You have to be very organised because if you miss that bus, it’s not easy to get there if you aren’t renting a car.
While you’re in the area, you should also check out Iwato Shrine and the Amaterasu Railway. The railway is a great way to get a better view of the valley from above -so long as you have a head for heights!
Overall, I would say seeing Takachiho is a must if you’re visiting Japan!

Ryokan Shinsen was absolutely AMAZING!
Ryokan Shinsen was absolutely AMAZING! Everything from communication before through our stay was exceptional. The food was the best we have had in Japan (we have lived here 2 and a half years). The service was top notch and the private onsen was wonderful. Highly recommend.

Highly recommending the nature trail walk from Manai falls...
Highly recommending the nature trail walk from Manai falls to Takachiho Shrine. It offers better view than boating ard the waterfall. If time allows, do go to Amanoiwato Shrine - the view at Amano Yasukawara is awesome. If you eat beef, lunch at Nagomi is one of the best option!

A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature.
A small town, but filled with culture and beautiful nature. I really enjoyed the shrine and getting some omamori as gifts. The gorge was beautiful, but unfortunately the water was a little muddy when we went, and we couldn't ride the row boats due to high tide. Despite this, it was a great stay and I would want to come back to see it during Autumn season as I heard its really beautiful.
1. Great location - walking distance to Takachiho bus terminal, taxi and local train station, tourist association, shops, restaurants, Takachiho Gorge, shrines and tourist attractions.
2. Clean and comfortable futon beds on tatami mat. Spacious room good for 2 pax.
3. Friendly guesthouse owner.
4. Free coffee and tea bags.
5. No cooking facilities but can heat up food with microwave oven provided next to reception counter.
6. Can chit-chat with room guests from other countries at reception area till 10pm.
We came to Takachiho to visit the famous gorge and when looking at accommodation, there were little around. Ryokan Shinsen was definitely more on the pricer side, however having stayed the 2 nights, I would be more than keen to stay here again. The facilities and rooms were immaculate. The service was excellent, very attentive. Breakfast and dinner were included in the stay and it's definitely an experience. There is plenty of parking if you're planning on driving and close to tourist attractions.
location was close to Takachiho Gorge (5 min drive) and the Takachiho Shrine (5 min walk/1 min drive). ideal for staying after exploring Takachiho Gorge area.
new, clean and modern hotel. well decorated lobby and rooms. all rooms were reasonable distance from elevator.
plenty of free parking available for guests. right on the main street.
had shabu-shabu for dinner, which was good quality.
breakfast was in same restaurant, fair selection.
staff were polite and clear in communication.
This was the best ryokan we've ever stayed in Japan! Not only it was exceptionally clean and located in a very quiet neighborhood, but there were also rooms with private bathrooms, which is quite rare to find! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Takachiho gorge is only 10 minutes away, there's a direct road to it just around the corner of the hotel. If you get lucky enough you might even see an owl at night!
read in previous reviews that the hotel staff could walk guests to the evening show at 8pm. when we asked them if they could do so, they said no. the hotel is surrounded by funeral parlours and saw empty houses so it would have been nice if they offered to walk us as there are no street lamps. we eventually did not go for the show even tho we bought the tickets . we also saw a big cockroach in the bathroom.
Very cool traditional style room with modern ammenities (Toilet, shower, Bath). The downstairs area has an awesome collection of manga (however it is all in Japanese). We stayed here while we went to the Gorge and the Kagura Dancing. It is very close to both and worth the trip. The staff were very helpful and provided clothes washing service to us which was very helpful.
This is an EXCEPTIONALLY GREAT ryokan. We stayed in a villa that had a private onsen bath, heated floors, manicured Japanese garden and all amenities. The meals were excellent. The staff was great. This is truly a first class ryokan that I would highly recommend to everyone.
We had the unit with the private outdoor bath. The unit is very spacious and well equipped. Host was very helpful and friendly. Helped us with reservation for dinner. A quiet location not far from Takachiho gorge and very near Amanoiwato Shrine.
Absolutely massive private tatami room. Free parking, and in a pretty good location. We left our car at the hostel, easy walking distance to restaurants. Maybe 20ish minutes to the Takachiho Shrine, and another 10-15 to get down to the gorge.
The person running the hotel was very sweet. The guest house was large and had everything you would need. Had a great traditional feel to it. We loved it. It was perfect for visiting Takachiho gorge the next morning. Great location.
Very close to Takachiho gorge and Takachiho Shrine which is a lovely peaceful place which we visited several times. The Kagura performances there are an added bonus.
Excellent helpful staff.
Free Tea, Coffee and water in the lobby but also the locations is very convenient to visit Takachiho Gorge and Takachiho-jinja. Everything was clean and quiet during the night.
High privacy as there are only 8 units in the resort. Extremely luxurious room and the Kaiseki dinner is one of the best. The Takachiho steak was the highlight.
