We visited quite a few places during our two week stay in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and then we took a two day bike ride from Imabari to Onomichi). Nikko was the most beautiful of the beautiful places we visited. Took a bus ride up the hill and hiked in the forest which boasts two types of bear, deer and monkeys. The temple was beautiful and we enjoyed trying local food. We each had a "Yuba set" at a local restaurant.

The rooms were freezing cold no heating and it was -5 inside the hotel. They provided us with one thin blanket nothing like advertised, the windows were open and unable to close. We are having to seek medical help as one of my friends has developed hypothermia. No food no drink and the toilet facility does not flush.
Said in advert the beds would be made up for us. After a vicious scolding by the owners wife we had to awkwardly make up our own beds with no instructions at all.
If you like being shouted at, sleeping on a solid cold floor with a stone for a pillow this is definitely the place for you.
Didn't really wanna even give the one star but no choice for 0*.

Nikko is a lovely small place.
Nikko is a lovely small place. The local Chinese on the high street has amazing food, it has a very small door and would be easy to miss, but make the effort to find it.
The temples are amazing, but I loved the mountains, if you like trekking then you will love Nikko.

Fabulous place to visit with the right balance between nature walks and temple and shrine visits. Our favorite visits were Toshogu and Rinno-ji Temples, a day trip to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls with a walk towards the Italian and English Embassy residences was beautiful. If you still have time, the Imperial Tomozawa Villa is worth spending a couple of hours at. We did everything by bus and it was very well organised. Train station has convenient coin lockers for luggage and a Yamato counter to deliver your luggage at your hotel so you can start visiting without being troubled.

i loved the variety of hiking trails - there was no shortage of beautiful nature. there are populated trails and quieter trails, and the bus service was very convenient once i got the hang of it. while the shrines were pretty enough, i preferred the rinnoji shrine gardens and would have preferred to spend more time hiking instead of fighting with the crowds at toshugu shrine. senjogahara was stunning and i would have liked to spend more time at the yumoto and kirifuri trails.
october was a little early for autumn leaves, so maybe i will return later in the year next time. that said, it was a pity i just missed the shrine festival this year!
The welcoming, friendly spirit, kindest person I have encountered in my stay Mariko and her husband Yosi She is very nice and caring. The room is clean and shared facilities are great. Mariko made us feel welcome in her home, the Japanese home experience is the highlight of our trip at Nikko. All basic things covered with a lots of freebies you wouldn’t expect if you book in a fancy hotels. Mariko looks after her guest very well and send them off with full tummy and good spirit. You have to book if you want to experience this.
The location was really good. There were very few restaurants and bars open in town when i visited (mid november) but it is close to the busline that rides between Nikko town and Yumoto Onsen. You have view on the lake. The hotel and family that runs it are really friendly. The owner helped me to get to Mount Hangetsu since the small busline only ran in the afternoon.
The room was very cosy and comfortable. They placed heaters and helped drying my wet shoes (without asking for it) which was like a secret gesture.
This place is immaculately clean. Never have I seen such a clean hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are large and comfortable. The bedding is on the floor and might be a little thin for some, but we managed to sleep well here. They provide lovely robe and toiletry sets for use when using their onsen facilities. The shampoo bar in the women’s onsen is fantastic. Location is great, step outside and you’re 1 min from the Shinkyo Bridge. I would definitely stay here if in Nikko again.
The host was amazing. He was taking care that we were arriving to the place correctly, communicating with us all the time. He received us and we had a great conversation with him, felt like speaking with a friend. He was caring and gave us very good tips of what to do in Nikko!
The place was also very good. Felt like a traditional Japanese experience, making your own futon bed and sleeping in it. Completely recommendable to have a different experience in Japan, this is a must!
Very glad to have stayed here for 2 nights though without meals. All sold out and Nikko is very busy destination. This ryokan hotel is near to all the must go places . And the onsen is great after a long day out. Staff very friendly & helpful. Piano at lounge in the evening is a relaxing place to hang out . Behind the hotel there is route to kanmangafuji abyss along Daiya river and a little tea house facing the river.
Simple dinner options 2-5 min walk away .
The host Yoshi, was warm and welcoming! He helped us plan our days to avoid crowds and made sure we were comfortable and welcome at the Sanga Nikko! The location is wonderful, close to train station and grocery store, easy walk into town. After staying in hotels it was wonderful to have a living room and kitchen to stretch out a bit and relax! Loved the Nespresso machine in the mornings. The home is very clean and well kept❤️
The property had a large and beautiful premium suite with a private bath. The room is plentiful for one person. The hotel had great dinner and breakfast that was included at the stay. You can walk around the hotel to view the Japanese garden, Japanese arts, and aquariums around the building. Finally, the service was excellent. They had an English speaker who helped with all my needs. Great hotel that is close to Nikko station.
This is the best place we've stayed in Japan by far. After more than a week around the country we finally had a hotel with so much space, cleanliness and beauty of the surroundings. The hotel smelled amazing too! The staff was super helpful especially Suzawa. They provide coffee, tea, water, and miso soup 24/7. I wish we stayed longer. Definitely worth recommending and returning to.
Our stay was wonderful. While the town itself is not exactly bustling, the hotel was excellent and easily accessible to nearby Nikko world heritage sites and hikes. The breakfast and dinner buffets were unbelievably wonderful filled with high quality Japanese delights. The rooftop onsen was gorgeous and updated. Our Japanese- style room was lovely and spacious. Highly recommend!
Lovely big rooms with old world charm. Had read previous comments on staff, but decided value for money and location made it worth trying and glad we did. Giving them your room key to get clean, fresh towels is a bonus in my book, big hotels just use a master key to do your room anyway. If you’re nice to people, they will be nice to you. Recommend the hotel and Nikko.
Amazing view!! I must have had the best room of the hotel. I could enjoy the sound of the river and the view of the trees and mountains. The location is perfect to walk around the north of Nikkō. The staff was very kind and helpful! I was afraid to share the bath but there is an individual bath too which made the whole experience even better.
Yoshi and his wife were the perfect hosts in every way. This was our favourite lodging in Japan. Nikko is a place where wished we'd stayed for a few more days and Sanga Nikko was a charming and welcoming small hotel. with only four or five rooms, and a shared kitchen/lounge area. Interesting conversations with fellow travellers guaranteed.
The food here is outstanding and the room is so huge comparing to the other Japanese hotels. Something very surprised me here is, they still keep the hospitality of traditional hotel but deliver in very good English . Just like their rooms, keep all the traditional parts but renovated into mordern style. It was a best night for me in Nikko
Room was cozy and a bit bigger than business hotels in the city (e.g. Tokyo, Utsunomiya) with ample floor space to fully open luggage. Decent spread for the free breakfast with both Western and Japanese options. Staff also spoke English well and made clarifications to better understand questions.
Really loved my stay here! Not a new and shiny capsule hotel, but well-kept and lovely vibe. Incredibly convenient with station proximity. The staff were very helpful when I needed to find a pharmacy. I’ve lived in Japan before but never been to Nikkō, and this hotel made it a great experience.
Peaceful little hotel at the lake with its own Onsen. They allowed us inside the Onsen without us having to cover our tattoos, which is not something you can take for granted. The staff was friendly and the room was very clean. The room was super spacious, especially for Japan!
This part of our trip through Japan was the unexpected highlight of the whole vacation. Nikko is quaint and beautiful and the hotel was peaceful and relaxing. We had such a great time! The staff were very accommodating and kind to our kids as well.
Breakfast was pleasant with a good variety In spacious surroundings. Staff are attentive. The onsen was good. Wifi was strong. Near the Nikko JR station and 5 min walk from Toby Nikko station.
A supermarket 10 min walk from hotel.
Located 5 minutes walk from nikko train station, and 20 minutes walk from the temples. Supermarket 5 minutes walk.Simple but functional room. Breakfast offered. Hotel as described on Booking.
The onsen and the dinner are definitely the highlights. The hotel is also very well located, next to the main shrines. A great way to experience the best Nikko has to offer for one night!
