Our stay was brief - only two full days - but in addition to its castle and historic district made for walking, Matsue is a good jumping off point for day trips to Izumo Taisha shrine, the Adachi Art Museum and the garden at Yushien.
One evening we had an enjoyable meal at a local "okonomiyaki" restaurant on the quiet street behind the hotel. The 88-year old proprietress was energetic, fun to speak with, and recommended a very tasty locally-brewed sake.

Matsue Castle and the surrounding castle complex are incredible. It’s a far more authentic experience of feudal era Japanese castles than the remodeled, refurbished, and in many ways entirely rebuilt castles of Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima, to name a few.

It's a wonderful and charming city! The art museums, castle/historical sites, and natural scenery are great. We had a lovely time just walking around the side streets and along the river. A hidden gem of Japan for sure!

Matsue castle is the best to recommend to you, to see from the outside and inside of old wooden architecture. I also recommend to visit an old great Izumo-taisha shrine by train from Matsue to Isumo-shi and bus from that station.

Matsue is a nice little city with a few interesting places...
Matsue is a nice little city with a few interesting places to see (such as the castle). Its public transportation does leave a bit to be desired in terms of frequency, but, on the other hand, there are conveniences like a bus from Matsue station to Hiroshima that runs at thirty minute intervals. It is a bit far from more prominent locations nearby, though, which made scarce public transit a bit bothersome.
This is a very new hotel across the street from Matsue Station but to get there you go through an underpass. The spotlessly clean room was small but perfectly fine for a single person and there were a lot of electrical outlets. Although my window faced Matsue Station, it was very quiet. I really enjoyed the breakfast buffet which had quite a variety of food and drinks. The comfortable well lit eating area had several small tables and a long hightop table with stools. The public bath was a real nice addition.
The staff were very polite and helpful. There is a complimentary free drink after 5 to 9 PM, a small ice cream from 3 to midnight. As well a half-size ramen service that I didn't try from 9to 11 PM. The breakfast was OK. There are vending machines located on the odd number floors. The location is really good, there is a 7/11 in front of the hotel as well a Lawson 50 meters away. Station 300ish meters away plus many restaurants. Lastly, the hotel seems to be very new, that is a big perk for me.
Guest house Yonemuraya was a pleasant surprise. It was so much better than staying at a hotel, as it felt like a more authentic Japanese experience. I travelled to Matsue for a conference at Kunibike Messe convention centre and this was only a short walk away. Emi-San was an excellent host, helping me with finding place for dinner, sightseeing and shopping ideas when I had time off work. There was a lively restaurant area nearby, and the train station, castle etc were within walking distance.
This was a luxurious treat and we all enjoyed it from the welcome by the general manager, the hot spring bath, the food, the room. One of our group had a massage which was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was an amazing buffet of Japanese and Western dishes. The hotel provided transport by shuttle bus to and from the hotel. Communications via booking.com worked well.
There are too many to mention! First of all, there was an English speaking staff. While, I’m always prepared to use some Japanese, it feels more welcoming as a foreigner when one staff member speaks English. Next, the buffet breakfast for ¥2300 was 100% worth it! It had a lot of local options. Last, the sky baths were simply heavenly.
The price, location, friendly staff and free meals make are the highlights of this property. No one I met spoke English but they were very helpful and utilized translators to make check in smooth so if you're Japanese is lacking don't worry. The location is key because it's so close to the station all of Matuse is at your fingertips.
Clean, quiet rooms
Excellent wi-fi speeds
Free coffee in lobby in the morning, and free breakfast
Welcoming staff
Room has a quiet clock which is nice
Chose hotel as a lower cost place compared to other places available. Room was satisfactory. Wi-fi speed was superb - I tested it at 360 Mb/s down and 100 Mb/s up.
Highly recommended guest house.
It’s valuable for solo traveler to stay and enjoy the Japanese onsen culture
The staff is super nice. They will notice my note and pick up from the JR station.
I have lost my watch in the hotel and then the staff help me to deliver it . I really appreciate the help from them.

Great central location, only a 5min walk from Matsue station. The check-in was easy, and the women's dorms had all the amenities I needed. The bed was comfortable and very spacious, and I didn't hear any noise from the other patrons. I would definitely stay again.
Great location, walking distance from the castle, museums and other sights. Very clean and good sized rooms. Staff were so lovely! This hotel also has a coin laundry and a convenience store inside the hotel. Perfect for international travellers. Very recommended!
Rooms are big with wide tatami area. Very nice view to the lake and by paying 500 JPY you can use the sister hotel (Chorakuen Ryokan & Onsen), which has one of the biggest outside onsen in Japan. There is even a free shuttle bus (once per hour).
I always enjoy staying here when I'm passing through the area. The staff are very helpful, and the cubic rooms are safe and convenient. The hotel also added a community refrigerator recently, which I thought was nice.
Traditional Japanese home. We loved the kotatsu table. It was in a good location for restaurants and near parks and the water. Easily fit our extended family of 6 (4 adults, 2 kids).
Very clean, and centrally located. There is a Poplar convenience store right inside the hotel. The beds were nice and the staff was very helpful and friendly.
Great dorm/sharehouse like hotel in center of town. Got little kitchen, lounge, showers, laundry, everything you need to survive. No issue to WFH there.
